Browse online reviews for contractors and make sure that you’re working with someone you can trust. Even better, talk to friends and family to get referrals. You might also be able to ask your real estate agent if he or she knows a good pro.

Start With a Written Proposal

The contractor you choose must be willing to put everything – down to the last detail – in writing. If you encounter a contractor who isn’t willing to put everything on paper, keep looking. Your written proposal and every document thereafter are the only things you have to fall back on if things go south.

Stay Flexible

Things can pop up that change the scope or timeline of your project, so you have to be ready to stay flexible… within reason. Remember, too, that remodeling projects can cause a big disruption in your life, so you’ll have to be ready to go with the flow.

Have Backup Plans

Your contract needs to cover everything, including a timeframe, prices and payment schedules. It also has to outline the materials your contractor is going to use – and it needs to outline the contractor’s procedures for handling changes.
